[MLS] Level 112. Individual Presentation : Why should we read Tolstoy's "War and Peace"?
Why should we read Tolstoy's "War and Peace"?

Good morning, you guys. I am going to talk about “Why should we read Tolstoy’s War and Peace”?
Let’s start with Overview.
Overview
-Leo Tolstoy’s Background : Biography
-Ted-Ed : Why should you read Tolstoy’s “War and Peace”?
-The Guardian : War and Peace: the 10 things you need to know
-Conclusion
Let’s first,
Leo Tolstoy : Biography Do you know who he is? / Ooop sorry, this is not Tolstoy.
When I first saw Tolstoy, I thought he was a Dumbledore professor.
Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian author, a master of realistic fiction and one of the world’s greatest novelists.
Tolstoy is best known for his two longest works, War and Peace (1865–69) and Anna Karenina (1875–77)
The Tolstoys were a well-known family of old Russian nobility. Despite his aristocratic background, (In other words, High Class) he tried to reform society by standing on the side of the suffering farmers and the socially disadvantaged.
Especially His doctrine of nonresistance had an important influence on Gandhi (Saul, 2021).
Let’s turn to Ted-talk.
Ted-Ed : Why should you read Tolstoy’s “War and Peace”?
How many pages is War and Peace? 1,225 pages. Usually about 300 pages per book.
"War and Peace" is a long book, sure, but it’s also a thrilling examination of history populated with some of the deepest, most realistic characters.
It contains three kinds of material—a historical account of the Napoleonic wars, the biographies of fictional characters, and a set of essays about the philosophy of history.
He totally hoped to write trying to understand his own times. The result is a grand question into history, culture, philosophy, psychology and the human response to war(Pelsue, 2017).
Another research.
The Guardian : War and Peace: the 10 things you need to know
I will pick three out of these.
1)There is no hero and no heroine. This is the story of a group of people living within a society. For example, One of the.. Andrei is not Tolstoy’s hero, and Natasha is not a romantic heroine. Don’t expect to be able to predict what happens.
2)Anyone who tells you that / you can skip the “War” parts / and only read the “Peace” parts is an idiot. The parts that interest you personally and the parts that you find of only abstract curiosity are going to change / when you read the book at 20, and again at 50.
3)The book greatness goes without saying: It is not just great, but also the best novel ever written – the warmest, the roundest, the best story and the most interesting (Hensher, 2016).
To sum up,
Conclusion
- Leo Tolstoy, Undoubtedly, was regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time.
- War and peace are not only historical novels that record historical events, but they are also recognized artistically through a series of processes of realizing the meaning and love of life through war situations.
- The sum total of Tolstoy’s imaginative powers. The vast space, numerous characters, and changing scenes are not records of individuals, but records of Russian society.
That’s WHY we should read War and Peace.
